AUDIENCE
This policy applies to all visitors to our website, mylostpetalert.com (“Web Site”), as well as customers who purchase the services we offer.
OVERVIEW
We are committed to protecting the privacy of our users and strive to provide a safe, secure experience. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use and share it, how long we keep it, and the choices and rights you have.
ACCEPTANCE OF TERMS
By using this Web Site you accept the collection, use, and transfer of your personal information as described in this policy. Please read it carefully. If you do not agree with how we collect and process personal information, please do not use the Web Site.
COLLECTING PERSONAL INFORMATION
We may collect, store, and use the following kinds of personal information:
- information about your device and your visits, including your IP address, approximate geographic location, browser type and version, operating system, referral source, length of visit, page views, and navigation paths;
- information you provide when registering or purchasing, including your name, phone number, and email address;
- information you provide about your pet (name, description, photos, last-seen location) so we can create and deliver your alert;
- information you provide to subscribe to notifications or newsletters;
- information generated when you use our services, including the timing, frequency, and pattern of use;
- information contained in communications you send to us or through our Web Site, including their content and associated metadata.
Payment information. Card payments are processed by our payment provider, Stripe. Your full card number is entered directly with Stripe and is not stored on our servers. We may retain limited, non-sensitive transaction details (such as the last four digits, card brand, and a payment reference) to service your order, handle disputes, and meet our record-keeping obligations.
HOW WE PUBLISH AND SHARE YOUR ALERT AND CONTACT INFORMATION
Our service works by spreading the word about your lost pet as widely as possible so that whoever finds your pet can reach you. When you place a lost-pet alert, you authorize us to publish and share the information in your alert—including your pet’s details and photo and your own contact information (such as your name and phone number)—publicly and with third parties for the purpose of reuniting you with your pet. Specifically, this information may be:
- printed on flyers that we generate, fax, and distribute to residents, businesses, shelters, and veterinary offices in your area;
- published in posts and advertisements on our Web Site and on social media platforms such as Facebook/Meta and X;
- read aloud in the automated telephone calls and included in the faxes we send on your behalf;
- stored in our database and provided to members of the public who contact us—including verbally, over the phone—with information about, or inquiries regarding, your pet.
This public sharing of your contact information is an essential part of the service you are purchasing. Because your phone number may be made public and cannot be “recalled” once distributed, please provide the contact number at which you wish to be reached, and do not place an alert if you are not comfortable with your contact information being shared in this way. If you want us to stop displaying your information going forward, contact us and we will remove it from materials within our control, though we cannot retrieve information already distributed to the public.
PERSONAL INFORMATION OF PEOPLE WE CONTACT ON YOUR BEHALF
To deliver a lost-pet alert we place automated telephone calls and send faxes to residents and local businesses (such as veterinary offices and shelters) near where your pet was lost. To do this we process contact details—primarily phone and fax numbers—obtained from commercial data sources and public business listings. Every fax we send carries an opt-out notice, and anyone can ask to be removed from our contact lists at any time via our Opt-Out page; removal requests are added to our Do Not Contact lists automatically and honored on subsequent alerts.
These calls and faxes are informational lost-pet notices — they tell the recipient that a pet is missing and how to reach the owner. They are not advertising, marketing, or telemarketing. We design our alert program to operate consistently with applicable telephone and fax laws, including the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (47 U.S.C. § 227): our automated calls identify My Lost Pet Alert and provide a business contact number and are placed only between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. in the recipient’s local time, our faxes identify the sender and carry a notice explaining how to stop receiving them, and any recipient can opt out at any time via our Opt-Out page, after which the number is added to our Do Not Contact lists and excluded from future alerts.
USING PERSONAL INFORMATION
Personal information submitted to us is used for the purposes described in this policy or on the relevant page. We may use your personal information to: operate and personalize our Web Site; enable and deliver the services you request; process your transactions; send you non-marketing service communications (such as order confirmations and alert status); send you notifications or newsletters you have requested (you can unsubscribe at any time); send you marketing communications about our own services where permitted (you can opt out at any time); provide third parties with aggregate, de-identified statistics that do not identify you; and handle enquiries and complaints.
We will not, without your express consent, supply your personal information to any third party for that third party’s direct marketing.
SERVICE PROVIDERS WE SHARE WITH
We share personal information with vendors who process it on our behalf to run the service. Categories include:
- Payments — Stripe;
- Alert delivery — our voice-broadcast provider (calls) and fax provider;
- Advertising — Meta/Facebook, where we run advertisements that feature the lost pet’s information (photo, description, and last-seen area) to reach potential sightings. These advertisements are about the pet; we do not use your personal information for interest-based advertising unrelated to your alert;
- Support and communications — our help-desk and email-delivery providers;
- Hosting, security, and content delivery — our hosting and CDN providers.
These providers may use your information only to perform services for us.
DISCLOSING PERSONAL INFORMATION
We may disclose your personal information:
- to the extent we are required to do so by law;
- in connection with any ongoing or prospective legal proceedings;
- to establish, exercise, or defend our legal rights (including for fraud prevention);
- to a purchaser (or prospective purchaser) of any business or asset we are selling; and
- to any person who we reasonably believe may apply to a court or authority for disclosure where such disclosure would reasonably be ordered.
Except as provided in this policy, we will not provide your personal information to third parties.
YOUR PRIVACY RIGHTS
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to the personal information we hold about you, to request correction or deletion, to opt out of marketing, and to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of your personal information. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. We will verify your request using information already associated with your account (for example, by confirming control of the email address on file); we do not require you to send a copy of your driver’s license or credit card. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
DO NOT SELL OR SHARE MY PERSONAL INFORMATION
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral (interest-based) advertising. The only public sharing of your information we perform is the publication of your lost-pet alert—including the contact information you provide—for the purpose of reuniting you with your pet, as described in “How We Publish and Share Your Alert and Contact Information” above; that sharing is the service you request and is not a sale. If you nonetheless wish to submit a “Do Not Sell or Share” request, email [email protected] with the subject “Do Not Sell or Share,” or enable a recognized opt-out preference signal such as Global Privacy Control (GPC) in your browser, and we will honor it. (Note that opting out does not stop the publication of an active alert you have placed, since that is the service itself—use the removal process above for that.)
DATA RETENTION
We keep personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes described here—generally for the life of your account and your active alerts, and afterward as needed to comply with legal, tax, accounting, and dispute-resolution obligations. Contact details on our Do Not Contact lists are retained specifically so we can continue to honor your opt-out.
SECURITY OF PERSONAL INFORMATION
We take reasonable technical and organizational precautions to prevent the loss, misuse, or alteration of your personal information, and store it on secure, access-controlled servers. Card transactions are encrypted in transit and handled by Stripe. You acknowledge that transmission over the internet is inherently insecure and we cannot guarantee the security of data sent over the internet. You are responsible for keeping your password confidential; we will never ask you for it except when you log in.
CHILDREN
Our services are intended for adults (18+). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
AMENDMENTS
We may update this policy from time to time by publishing a new version on our Web Site, and will revise the “Last updated” date above. Material changes may also be announced by an on-site notice or by email. Please review this page periodically.
THIRD PARTY WEBSITES
Our Web Site may link to third-party websites. We have no control over, and are not responsible for, the privacy practices of third parties. Please review their privacy statements before using them.
COOKIES & ANALYTICS
Our Web Site uses cookies—small identifier files stored by your browser. Cookies do not typically identify you directly, but information we store about you may be linked to information from cookies. Cookies may be “persistent” (remaining until expiry or deletion) or “session” (expiring when you close your browser). We use cookies to:
• remember the items in your shopping cart; and
• compile aggregate data about site traffic and interactions so we can improve the site (we may use trusted analytics and advertising providers that collect this information on our behalf).
If cookies are disabled, reporting a lost pet and other parts of the Web Site may not function. You can manage cookies through your browser settings.
